December 2016 and it was the annual Christmas Curry with 25 of the Socials at the wonderful Tayyabs. Normal form - fine food, rich gossip, and lots of discussion on the future of innovation.
A special mention goes to four people who spoke at the evening and provided inspiration for all...
First up David Bomphrey from Jaunt who spoke about the journey he has been on to find a role which he felt delivered on his passion to innovate. Creating the digital experience behind the newly built EE brand set a high bar and following this up led to journeys into FS (not so much) and now Jaunt where he is inventing the future every day. Yeah.
Then Vassilios Alexiou who also spoke about his desire to disrupt which began from a very young age. Vass has been at the forefront of experience design since the start and his restlessness has lead him to create many of the experiences that have laid the foundation for today.
My partner in crime Will Harvey was next and shared how he got his hands on Snapchat Spectacles thanks to Tim Polder queueing up for 3 hours to get them out of the dispensing booth that popped up over Manhattan. His favourite feature? The ability for images to be portrait and landscape. When will they be most handy? CES - plenty of need to film and be in the shade. Get a full review of Snapchat Specs from this wonderful The Verge article.
Next up was me with a flash talk on www.christmassowhite.com - an initiative to draw attention to the lack of diverse imagery at Christmas and also to create more diverse imagery to be released into the world. The initiative is for and by the industry - as marketeers we are responsible for creating the change we want to see. Thanks to the wonderful support of the Socials #christmasSOwhite was covered by The Metro, The Guardian and many more publications. Thank you everyone.
Last of all we held a vote on whether VR or Snapchat Specs were hot and which was hottest...unsurprisingly VR won. And in that vein our next meet-up on the 6th February will be a panel on exactly that - the power of VR and AR - as well as a debrief on CES. See you then...
